2019 Scott Names Male TAC Athlete of the Year
    Dorien Simon, Lakes High School

The Tacoma Athlete Commission proudly announces Dorien Simon as the Scott Names Male Athlete of the Year for 2019. As a wide receiver for the Lake Lancers, he dazzled opponents with his speed and versatility on the gridiron. As a diver for the swim team, Dorien demonstrated grace and poise, and as a sprinter on the track and field team, he ran past everyone. A multi-talented athlete with an insatiable desire to compete at the highest levels, Dorien has demonstrated to opposing coaches, sports enthusiasts, and college coaches that he is a premier athlete. Dorien will matriculate to Stanford University in the fall to continue his education and athlete prowess.

Dorien's swimming and diving coach writes, "Dorien Simon is one of the most committed, hard-working athletes I have had the honor to coach in my seven years at Lakes High School. He is a star track athlete who decided to come out for diving his freshman year and has made a lasting impact on the sport and other teams. He has placed in the top 18 at state every year, taking second in the state this year. Dorien exemplifies what a student-athlete should be through his work ethic, school performance, and team leadership."

As a track and field athlete, Dorien is the defending state champion in the 100 and 200 meters, as well as a member of the 400-meter relay team. He has not lost a race in the 100 or 200 meters in two years except for a 6th place finish at the Brooks Invite last year. Dorien has been invited to compete at the Brooks Invite again this year on June 15 at Husky Stadium where he will face some of the top sprinters in the nation. Dorien won the 100 and 200 meters at the Viking Relays, Add it Up Invite, Eason Invite, and the Shoreline Invite this year as well as running on many winning relay teams.

Dorien's track coach wrote, "Dorien is the team leader, who gets more excited when his teammates do well than when he has a good performance. He is the first to practice, and never leaves until everything is done. That includes helping to clean up and, put away blocks. Dorien is the one you will see leading the team in warm-up drills, or doing something extra at the end of a workout for personal betterment. Despite his incredible success, he has never elevated himself above his teammates. Dorien is truly a coach's dream."

Off the field, Dorien has a 4.0 GPA, is a member of the National Honor Society, a member of the Lakewood Council and the Parks and Recreation Board. He has raised money for Multiple Sclerosis and raised money during school lunches for kids in Africa. In his spare time, he has volunteered at the Point Defiance Zoo and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Institute.

Dorien is a talented, caring, and deserving athlete who will make a difference in the world.
