Tom Names Inspirational AwardTom Names, born on April 14, 1934 in Tacoma, graduated from Stadium High School and College of Puget Sound where he played basketball. Prior to enrolling at UPS Tom joined the Army where he served honorably. In the early 1960’s Tom along with his parents (Scott and Sis), brother Clint and sister Paula, opened Scott’s Athletic Supply in Lakewood which they ran and operated for over 30 years.

The Names brothers grabbed plenty of recognition on the hardwood over the years. Tom was the city scoring record-setter at Stadium before Clint broke that mark. He was also a four-year letter winner at the University of Puget Sound and was an all-Northwest AAU selection following his collegiate career. In fact, Scott, Tom and Clint played together on the same team in their golden years, combining for 198 years worth. Tom continued playing basketball until his mid 70’s on a Senior Olympics team traveling to Utah and Florida and winning the Senior games once!

Tom loved the game of golf and was a member of Fircrest Golf Club having joined in 1960. He was the Elks Allenmore Champion in 1959, won the Fircrest Club title in 1973 and was runner-up in 1961, 1974 & 1975. Tom was president of the Fircrest Golf Club in 1976, and one of his big thrills was caddying for Arnold Palmer in the 1960 Carling Open.

Tom was a founding board member of the Names Family Foundation that his parents formed and he found great pleasure serving on the board and giving back to the community he loved so much. Tom was also an active member of the Lakewood Rotary.

Tom’s favorite place to be was at the family cabin at Lake Chelan, where he and Meg spent every summer. Tom loved the University of Washington Huskies and was a season football and basketball ticket holder for numerous years.

The most important people in Tom’s life were his family and friends. He was married to Meg for 56 years and they had three daughters-Erin (Mark) Shagren, Beth (Dennis) Dobbs, and Monica (Steve) King; 10 grandchildren-Tommy (Jennifer) Friesen, Kelli (Sam) Dupuis, Amanda Shagren, Sammie Shagren, Scott Shagren, Megan Shagren, Jonathan Nix, Claire Nix, Erica King and Emily King; and two great grandchildren-Samson and Maxx Dupuis.

Tom passed away on February 1st, 2015 at the age of 80.
